Silkie Bantam Hens

Silkie Bantam Hens Highlights

• Gentle and Docile Temperament: Silkies are known for their exceptionally gentle, docile, and friendly nature. They are often described as lap chickens and are generally very calm and easy to handle.
• Unique Silky Plumage: Their most distinctive feature is their soft, fluffy plumage that resembles fur or silk. This unique feathering lacks barbicels, giving them their characteristic fluffy appearance.
• Good Brooders and Mothers: Silkies possess strong maternal instincts and are excellent brooders and mothers. They are often used to hatch eggs for other breeds due to their nurturing qualities.
• Ornamental and Pet Quality: While they do lay eggs, Silkies are primarily kept as ornamental birds or pets due to their unique appearance and gentle disposition. They are well-suited for backyard flocks and children.
• Bantam Size: As a bantam breed, Silkies are small in size. This makes them suitable for smaller coops and easier for individuals to manage. They are not typically large egg producers.
• Care Considerations: Their fluffy feathers can be prone to getting dirty, especially in wet conditions. Keeping their environment clean and dry is important. They also have a crest of feathers on their head which can sometimes obstruct their vision.
